Mike Cullen is a photographer based in Brooklyn, New York, specializing in abstract and impressionistic landscapes. After a few decades working as a photo researcher, the economy has, shall we say, encouraged Mike to rekindle his love of making art.
He lives in walking distance to two parks, so he tends to shoot a lot of trees and leaves and paths. Mike loves to photograph a scene and make it blurry and out of focus, thereby reducing it to its barest recognizable elements: color and shape. He likes the tangled forms of trees and branches.
This approach runs counter to his photography training at the Rochester Institute of Technology and NYU, that always emphasized well-lit and tack-sharp photos. He seems to be taking inspiration from Van Gogh rather than Ansel Adams.
